1. Using a "One Size Fits All" Ink System
One of the most common pitfalls is assuming that the ink you use for textiles or metal will work on plastic. Remember the childhood nostalgia of using a rubber stamp on a piece of paper? The ink soaked right in. Plastic, however, is a non-absorbent "substrate" (that’s just industry-speak for the material you’re printing on).
If you use a standard garment ink on a polyethylene (PE) bottle, it won’t bond. It will sit on the surface, waiting for the first fingernail to scratch it off.
The Fix: You need to match your ink to your polymer. There is a "horses for courses" philosophy here; a PVC ink is different from a Polypropylene (PP) ink. Always check the technical data sheet or talk to an expert about screen printing inks to ensure the chemical bond is there.

2. Skipping the "Science Experiment" (Surface Treatment)
Many plastics, like PP and PE, have what we call "low surface energy." Imagine trying to paint a block of ice; the liquid just beads up and rolls off. To get ink to "wet" the surface and stay there, you often need to change the surface chemistry of the plastic.
The Fix: This usually involves flame treatment or corona treatment. It sounds high-tech (and it is!), but it’s essentially a way of "opening up" the surface of the plastic so the ink can grab hold. If your ink is failing the "tape test" (where you apply sticky tape to the print and pull it off), your surface treatment: or lack thereof: is likely the culprit.
3. Letting Static Electricity Take Control
Have you ever rubbed a balloon on your hair and watched it stick to a wall? Plastic is a magnet for static. In a print shop, static doesn’t just attract dust; it actually pulls the ink away from where it’s supposed to go. This leads to "spitting" or "feathering," where the edges of your design look blurry and hairy.
The Fix: You need to ground your equipment and, ideally, use anti-static bars or ionizing air blowers. Keeping the humidity in your print room at a consistent level also helps keep those pesky electrons in check. A clean, neutral environment is the secret to those vibrant, sharp lines.

4. Printing on "Invisible" Contaminants
You might think a fresh batch of plastic jars straight from the box is clean. In reality, they are often coated in "mold release agents": chemicals used to help the plastic pop out of its mold during manufacturing. These agents act like a non-stick frying pan for your ink.
The Fix: Always wipe down your substrate with a dedicated cleaner or isopropyl alcohol before the first squeegee stroke. Even the oils from your fingertips can ruin a print, so handling parts with gloves isn't just for show: it’s a necessity for high-quality results.
5. The "More is Better" Ink Fallacy
When people see a faint print, their instinct is to flood the screen and push more ink through. On a t-shirt, the fabric drinks that ink up. On a plastic bottle, that extra ink has nowhere to go. It spreads out under the screen, causing "bleeding" and losing all the fine detail in your design.
The Fix: Use a higher mesh count (a finer screen) and maintain a sharp squeegee. You want a thin, even "deposit" of ink. It’s much easier to cure a thin layer of ink than a thick, gooey one that remains tacky in the middle.

6. Ignoring "Off-Contact" Settings
"Off-contact" is the tiny gap between your screen and the plastic surface. If the screen is sitting directly on the plastic (zero off-contact), the screen will stick to the wet ink as it lifts, creating a textured, "orange peel" effect.
The Fix: You want the screen to snap away immediately after the squeegee passes. Adjust your machine so there’s a 1mm to 3mm gap. This "snap-off" is what gives you that beautiful, smooth finish that looks like it was fused into the plastic itself.
7. Guessing the Curing Time
Curing is the process of turning liquid ink into a solid, durable film. If you’re using solvent inks, they need time for the solvents to evaporate. If you’re using UV inks, they need the right "dose" of light. Guessing the temperature or the belt speed of your dryer is the fastest way to have an entire batch of products returned by a customer.
The Fix: Use a temperature "doughnut" or a radiometer to measure what’s actually happening inside your dryer. Just because the dial says 60°C doesn't mean the surface of the plastic is hitting that target. Consistency is the hallmark of a professional print shop.
